Home improvement contractor arrested for scamming Rockland ...

By editor, on August 2nd, 2012

NEW CITY ? A 42-year-old Suffern man has been charged with felony grand larceny for allegedly stealing $6,750 from a New City homeowner with whom he had a contract to construct a car port.

Scott Motz of 27 Highland Avenue in Suffern is a licensed home improvement contractor who operates under the company name of S.T.M. Construction. He was arrested at his home without incident on Wednesday.

According to the charges, the victim contracted with Motz in December 2011 to construct the car port. The customer gave him a down payment of $2,400 which represented one-third of the cost. Shortly after the work began, Motz allegedly requested another installment from the victim to purchase materials. The customer paid the customer $4,250 to continue the work.

It is also alleged Motz produced a fraudulent invoice from an Orange County lumber company in an attempt to deceive the homeowner.

At the time that he was paid for this job, the Rockland County Office of Consumer Protection had already suspended his license on the basis of an earlier claim.

Motz is accused of walking away from the job and failing to provide an accounting of the victim?s money.

If convicted, he could face up to seven years in state prison.

Embracing geotagging how to journal your trips and contribute to Google Earth with snapshots

Geotagging. It's not exactly a long, lost art, but it's certainly not something most folks bother to do after a trip. Avid travelers, hikers and the general outdoorsy crowd have been embracing the feature for years, though, and it's actually seeping into the mainstream without most individuals even noticing. How so? Smartphones. Given the proliferation of iPhones, Android handsets and Windows Phone devices making their way onto the market -- coupled with the explosive use of geo-minded social networks like Path, Instagram and Foursquare -- an entire generation is now growing up in a geotagged world. Phone users have it easy; so long as there's a data connection and an embedded GPS module (commonplace in modern mobile devices), there lies the ability to upload a photo with a patch of metadata embedded. Snap a shot at a national park, upload it, and just like that, viewers and friends from around the world now have an idea as to what a specific place on the Earth looks like.

For travel hounds like myself, that's insanely powerful. I'm the kind of person that'll spend hours lost in Google Earth, spinning the globe around and discovering all-new (to me, at least) locales thanks to the magic of geotagging. It's sort of the photographic equivalent to putting a face to a name. By stamping latitude, longitude, altitude and a specific time to any given JPEG, you're able to not only show the world what you saw, but exactly when and where you saw it. It's a magical combination, and with GPS modules finding their way into point-and-shoot cameras -- not to mention external dongles like Solmeta's magnificent N3 (our review here) -- there's plenty of opportunity to start adding location data to your photos. For more on the "Why would I want to?" and "How would I best display 'em?" inquiries, let's meet up after the break.

Geologists to gather data for Danish North Pole claim

Does the North Pole belong to Greenland and by extension to Denmark, to which it is politically linked? That's the question Danish geologists heading for the Arctic this week will be trying to answer.

They hope the seismic data they collect between now and mid-September will support the claim of Denmark and Greenland to 150,000 square kilometres of extra territory extending north from Greenland into the oil and gas-rich Arctic sea floor.

Their claim rests on whether an underwater formation extending north of Greenland called the Lomonosov Ridge qualifies as an extension of Greenland's land mass. If it does, Greenland can bid to extend its undersea territory.

Jens J?rgen M?ller, head of the department organising the expedition at the Geological Society of Denmark and Greenland, says the key data will come from an echo sounding device mapping the profile of the seabed along the ridge, and from seismic measurements of sediment thickness.

Any claim that the Lomonosov Ridge belongs to Denmark and Greenland would meet resistance from Russia: in 2007 it claimed that the opposite end of the ridge is an extension of Siberia.

Other nations laying claims to chunks of the Arctic are Canada, Norway and possibly the US. Geological data is a prerequisite to winning an officially recognised claim to territory, according to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, says M?ller.

Cyclist killed in collision with Olympics shuttle bus

A man on a bicycle was killed Wednesday in a collision with an Olympics media shuttle bus just outside London's Olympic Park, police said, while a man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

An AFP reporter saw a man's legs protruding from under the double-decker bus on a Games lane slip road leading from the park. The man's mangled racing bicycle lay nearby.

A group of around 30 soldiers who had been carrying out security duties at the park ran over to the scene.

Police, ambulances, fire crews and an air ambulance were called to the incident. The man was pronounced dead by an air ambulance doctor.

The Metropolitan Police said they were called at 7.42pm (1842 GMT).

"The cyclist, a man aged 28, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:14pm (1914 GMT)."

Next of kin have been informed and formal identification is expected to take place Thursday.

"A man aged in his mid 60s was arrested at the scene at 9:28pm (2028 GMT) on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently in custody at an east London police station."

The incident happened metres outside the perimeter of the Olympic Park behind the Riverbank Arena, where a men's hockey match between Pakistan and Argentina was taking place.

The scene was cordoned off with police tape, while the soldiers put up black screens around the site and a blue tent was erected next to the bus.

The shuttle buses -- generally London double deckers -- ferry the thousands of journalists covering the Games between the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, and hotels in the city centre.

A London 2012 spokesman confirmed that the bus was carrying media from the Olympic Park.

In the wake of the fatal incident, Britain's Bradley Wiggins, who won the men's individual time trial gold earlier Wednesday, was asked about how safe London's roads are for cyclists.

"It's dangerous and London is a busy city and a lot of traffic," the Tour de France champion said.

"I haven't lived in London for 10 to 15 years now and it's got a lot busier since I was riding a bike as a kid round here, and I got knocked off several times.

"But I think things are improving to a degree -- there are organisations out there who are attempting to make the roads safer for both parties.

"We've all got to co-exist on the roads.

"Cyclists are not ever going to go away as much as drivers moan, and as much as cyclists maybe moan about certain drivers they are never going to go away, so there's got to be a bit of give and take."

Wiggins said he would like to see the introduction of a law making it compulsory to wear cycling helmets.

AARP Launches Networking, Job Search Site For Unemployed

AARP today announced the launch of Work Reimagined, a social networking site powered by LinkedIn that connects post 50 professionals on the hunt with employers seeking experienced workers, and with their peers.

Work Reimagined will offer access to openings with the nearly 120 employers "who have taken the Work Reimagined pledge, publicly committing to treat all employees equally regardless of age," according to an AARP press release. They include more than two dozen employers. At its launch, the site listed more than 2,600 openings at AT&T and just two available slots at Dollar General. Other employers listing immediate openings include tech firms such as Google, retailers such as Toys R Us and Lowe's and insurance firms including Scripps Health, United HealthCare and New York Life.

The site includes editorial content focused on post 50 workers, including news and advice from authors such as Penelope Trunk (who in her book "The Brazen Careerist" famously suggested workers ignore sexual harassment and take long lunches.)

Work Reimagined is part of an array of efforts to address employment challenges facing post 50 workers. While the jobless rate for older workers is lower than that of the population as a whole -- 6.2 percent in June -- the situation is grim for the long-term unemployed. Post 50s who were unemployed in June had been seeking work for an average of 55.6 weeks, and they make up nearly 53 percent of the long-term unemployed.

As economists Dean Baker and Kevin Hassett noted in a New York Times op-ed piece earlier this year:

"A worker between ages 50 and 61 who has been unemployed for 17 months has only about a 9 percent chance of finding a new job in the next three months. A worker who is 62 or older and in the same situation has only about a 6 percent chance. As unemployment increases in duration, these slim chances drop steadily."

Meanwhile, workers are increasingly changing careers to find work, according to a new study by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Researcher Bart Hobijn found that from 2005 to 2011, the majority of job openings in all industries and occupations were filled by people who previously did not work in that industry or job.

For-profit ventures smell an opportunity. For example, Empowered UCLA Extension, based in Campbell, CA, has teamed up with instructors from the University of California Los Angeles Extension Program to offer courses on the Apple iPad. It launches this fall and offers 10 certificate programs in fields that the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will have the greatest job growth, including healthcare, IT, project management and sustainability.

Empowered instructors are available via video chat and IM and the program offers one-on-one career guidance and coaching from professional career counselors and recruiters. It's aimed at professionals who already have a college degree and work experience (Actress Geena Davis has been touting the program in commercials.) But the tuition for fall 2012 is a hefty $9,800 -- and that's a discount off the regular price of $12,800.

  • An Expensive Watch

Lubin-Sherman says displaying wealth or status objects might convey that you really don't need the job.

  • A Diamond Ring

Even remove large diamond wedding rings, Lubin-Sherman suggests. "Choose items that are symbolic of humility such as sport watches, a simple wedding band," she says.

  • A Pocket Square

Unless you're New York Giants hero Victor Cruz heading for the Grammys, lose the pocket square.

  • A Recognizable Designer Handbag

Look for a handbag "that doesn't convey a 'herd' mentality or a desire to impress people with your money," said Lubin-Sherman. Save your nifty Prada bag to bring to work after you land the job.

  • A Status Tie

Skip the tie by Hermes and go with something less showy, Lubin-Sherman advises.

  • Status Loafers With No Socks
