HBT: Trumbo's recovery from broken foot delayed

Mark Trumbo?s season ended a week early because of a stress fracture in his right foot and the Rookie of the Year runner-up?s recovery timetable has been pushed back for the second time.

Trumbo was initially hoping to be recovered by now, but in November doctors added a month to his timetable and now Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports that he may not be cleared for baseball activities until late February.

Not only does that put his status for the beginning of spring training in doubt, it makes a potential move to third base even more unlikely than before. Or as Trumbo put it: ?I don?t think I had a complete picture of the extent of the injury when we first talked about this in late September.?

Albert Pujols? arrival and Kendrys Morales? potential return gives the Angels a logjam of first basemen and corner outfielders, leading to talk that Trumbo could see some action at third base. However, he?s never played even an inning at third base in the majors or minors and now he?s got a bum foot. At-bats are going to be hard to come by in the Angels? lineup and it wouldn?t be surprising if they lessened the logjam with a trade.

Northside Elementary Kindergarten Teacher Wins Golden Apple Award

Panama City - This week's Golden Apple award winner is a kindergarten teacher at Northside Elementary in Panama City. Kelly Lewis has been teaching kindergarten for 8 years. Her students are affectionately known as "Lewis' Lightning Bugs" because thier faces light up when learning something new.

In Mrs. Lewis' kindergarten classroom every new concept is an adventure of discovery. On this day, Mrs. Lewis was teaching about the number 18. Students use cubes to model it, trace it, and therefore, understand it. "What is your favorite thing to do in this class? asked Meredith TerHaar. "Math," said student Crayton Winn. "Why do you like math? Because it's fun," he replied. "They need the hands on so they can practice moving, manipulating, all that stuff that is sensory to help motivate the brain so they can take it all in and basically, essentially, just remember it," said teacher Kelly Lewis.

Mrs. Lewis says the inquisitive nature of kindergartners makes each and every day unique. "It's just a fun age, everything is magical to them, it's so great to see the growth in the students," said Lewis. "Mrs. Lewis works very, very hard to make sure her students have a strong educational program, but she also makes sure that there is a strong connection between home and school," said Wanda Robbins. "We fit as much as we can in the classroom, we go non-stop from beginning to end, but sometimes kids just need extra help, parent involvement is important," said Mrs. Lewis.

Congratulations to Kelly Lewis, this week's Golden apple award winning teacher. "She is the perfect teacher, she is the greatest teacher I had," said David. "I feel like at this age when they are young and learning is new to them, if we can make it fun then we can make learners for a lifetime," said Mrs. Lewis.

NFL star rips Tim Tebow over religion

(Getty images)

There are many people who do not like Tim Tebow?s outward showing of his love of God. Terrell Suggs is one of them.

The star Baltimore linebacker blasted Tebow after the Broncos? 7-3 loss to the Chiefs in which the Tebow-led offense continued to struggle.

?Once again God had to save Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos,? Suggs said on ESPN?s First Take on Tuesday. ?(Tebow) couldn?t even give them two drives?

?With all due respect we don?t need God on our sidelines,? Suggs said. ?I don?t feel comfortable I gotta pray every fourth quarter, like oh my God please come save me again.?

The Broncos, the fourth seed, host the Steelers on Sunday.

In order to see a Baltimore-Denver playoff matchup, the Texans would need to lose Saturday to Cincinnati.

Math in a Minute: How a tortoise can win a race

Caitlin Stier, video intern

Move over Achilles, a tortoise could outrun the Greek hero given a head start. This animation from The Open University explores the paradox proposed by the Greek philosopher Zeno of Elea.

Suppose Achilles and the tortoise run at a constant speed with the slow tortoise given a slight advantage. While Achilles can cover the lead quickly, by the time he reaches his competitor's starting line the tortoise has lumbered forward a short distance. While this advantage narrows as the race goes on, Achilles will always have further to go at any point the tortoise has passed.

Considered further, the puzzle even discredits movement itself. The gap between the contenders is divided an infinite number of intervals, which Zeno argued is impossible to overtake. The puzzle perplexed mathematicians for centauries until Georg Cantor's work on infinite series helped unravel it.

If you enjoyed this video, explore other paradoxes in our animated series including the hotel infinity paradox.

How to report Android Market scammers and spammers from your browser

Android Market Scam

Android Central reader @mjroberts22 this morning alerted us to an evil developer in the Android Market. A number of apps from Quarter MiLL look legit. We've featured Super Why Adventures -- a children's app -- on the site before. But look closely. In the app description, and after paying your $1.99 here, you'll note that it says to download the Amazon version of the app if this one isn't working properly.

That, obviously, should be a big red flag for everyone. In other words, DO NOT BUY THESE APPS.

But if you spot an evil developer, what to do about it? If you're using the Android Market from your phone, it's easy -- just scroll down to the bottom of the app and report it. If you're browing from your desktop, there's a handy link for reporting "inappropriate" apps (including scammers and spammers). We've got the link below. Just out the forum, and Google will do its thing.

More: Report a suspicious Android app to Google

Thanks to @mjroberts22 and @U_Mainah for the tips!

IP Carrier: Is Communications Spending Growing, or Not?

IP Carrier: Is Communications Spending Growing, or Not?

Is Communications Spending Growing, or Not?

As a practical matter, it often is difficult to ascertain whether consumer or business spending on particular communications services or products, though up or down in nominal terms, actually represent growth or decline.

The reason is that nominal increases in spending over time sometimes reflect broader price changes in the whole economy, rather than changes in demand or spending as a percentage of total spending.

Also, even nominal spending can be deceptive. If a flat dollar amount of spending over time also is accompanied by large decreases or increases of overall income, for example, the nominal spending can disguise ?real? changes.

Ignore for the moment changes in product value or features over time that also complicate comparisons. If ?X? amount of spending on any product also is accompanied by significant changes in a household or national budget, for example, then the implications can be quite significant.

As a percentage of spending, a flat amount automatically will represent a larger percentage of spending.

In other words, the product of a fraction always changes as either the nominator or denominator changes.

That noted, it is possible that spending patterns are changing, for the first time in decades. There is evidence that between 2007 and 2010, for example, U.S. households were spending much more on ?telephone equipment,? which has to represent purchases of mobile phones. That should, in principle, lead to higher spending on mobile communication services.

There also was a predictable increase in spending on ?communication services,? which probably reflects increases in video subscription rates, plus some incremental spending on mobile services for all those mobile devices people seem to be buying.

Keep in mind that those percentage increases might, or might not, represent a significant change in the percentage of household spending on services or devices.

Logic might suggest that most people do not spend much, in any given year, on fixed line phones or fax machines, for example.

So a 16-percent change on a small base might not represent much actual sales volume. A four-percent growth of spending on ?information processing? equipment, which presumably includes personal computers, tablets and possibly other personal mobile devices, might represent a bigger change in dollar volume.
On the other hand, logic also would suggest that people are spending more on tablets and smart phones, which could mean they are maintaining spending on legacy products, and adding new devices (increasing spending overall), substituting new products for older products (substituting new products for older products), or cutting back someplace else in budgets to add the new products.?

Looking back at the 1990 to 2008 period, for example, one can note ?huge? increases in nominal consumer spending on communications and information technology.

Since 1990, though, those changes also ?have been more than matched by broader increases in household income, holding the percentage of household spending on communications flat over the entire period.

One might also note that such figures also are not typically ?inflation adjusted? to show changes in constant dollar terms.

Since 1990, consumer spending on information and communications technology has grown from $197 billion to $545 billion, 5.1 percent of national disposable income in 1990, peaking at 5.9 percent in 2000, and falling to 5.4 percent in 2008. Those figures include both recurring spending on services and product purchases.

Spending on communications services has tripled over the same period, from $77 billion to $243 billion, and at 2.3 percent of national disposable income, up from 1.8 percent in 1990 but below its peak of 2.5 percent in 2001

Basically, the story is one of large increases in consumer value. Consumers are spending more on communications and information technology, but a steady percentage of disposable income

Yet consumer value has grown exponentially in the intervening years, one might argue. The problem is that changes in product quality are not reflected in retail price metrics. That is a common ?problem? where we look at software and computing devices, where a constant dollar amount buys more processing power and features every 18 months to 24 months.

U.S. communications expenditures as a share of national disposable income has been flat since 1997, but users have added over 100 million broadband and video connections and over 100 million wireless connections, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Such potential changes bear watching. It would be a very-big deal indeed if typical consumer spending on communications services and mobile devices were to deviate from their historical patterns in a markedly upward direction.

One might argue we already have seen a slight upward trend, measured as a percentage of total household spending. The other angle is that communications spending always will represent a very-small fraction of overall household spending, dwarfed by housing, food, medical care and other categories, for example.

Apple & Google Dominate Smartphone Market During 2011

Posted on January 2, 2012 10:50 AM by Rob Williams

We've been talking about smartphone trends quite a bit lately, but with 2011 behind us, there's no better time to take a look at the overall growth (or losses) experienced by some companies through the year. It's of little surprise that both Apple and Google dominated the share, but it comes at the expense of RIM and Microsoft. Palm? Non-existent, as far as comScore is concerned.

Over the course of the past 18 months, Apple's marketshare increase was 4.5% while Google's was a mind-blowing 27.3% - that's more than one-fourth of the entire market captured in a mere 18 months. While Apple's 4.5% seems pale in comparison, its marketshare has already remained impressive for some time, so growth has naturally slowed. Combined, Apple and Google command 75.6% of the smartphone market.

During the same period, RIM has experienced a constant decline, starting off with a 37.6% share but since dropping down to 19.7%. Ouch. Likewise, Microsoft's already paltry 10.8% share dropped to 5.7%.

Given these numbers, 2012 should be an interesting year for the smartphone market because it's hard to predict where things can go from here. Will Android continue to dominate while taking share away from Apple? Will Microsoft finally strike back and see its first increase in at least 18 months? Will we ever see a webOS phone added to the list? We'll have answers to all of these questions in roughly 365 days!

Revive Old Shoelaces By Cutting Them Down and Making Your Own Plastic Tip [DIY]

Revive Old Shoelaces By Cutting Them Down and Making Your Own Plastic TipShoelaces stretch out over time and end up being too long to be single knotted, which is an annoyance most of just deal with. Instructables user 2xlbu4u found a simple way to shorten laces without ruining them.

With a small piece of cheap heat shrink tubing, you make a new plastic tip and then cut down the laces to your desired size. Once the plastic is where you want it, shrink the plastic nub on with the heat shrinker. The end result looks exactly like a new pair of laces would, but with a nice, custom length that will fit your shoes properly. Find the guide over on Instructables with a few added tips to getting it right.
