NEW CITY ? A 42-year-old Suffern man has been charged with felony grand larceny for allegedly stealing $6,750 from a New City homeowner with whom he had a contract to construct a car port.
Scott Motz of 27 Highland Avenue in Suffern is a licensed home improvement contractor who operates under the company name of S.T.M. Construction. He was arrested at his home without incident on Wednesday.
According to the charges, the victim contracted with Motz in December 2011 to construct the car port. The customer gave him a down payment of $2,400 which represented one-third of the cost. Shortly after the work began, Motz allegedly requested another installment from the victim to purchase materials. The customer paid the customer $4,250 to continue the work.
It is also alleged Motz produced a fraudulent invoice from an Orange County lumber company in an attempt to deceive the homeowner.
At the time that he was paid for this job, the Rockland County Office of Consumer Protection had already suspended his license on the basis of an earlier claim.
Motz is accused of walking away from the job and failing to provide an accounting of the victim?s money.
If convicted, he could face up to seven years in state prison.
