REDLANDS - The Amputee Connection of Redlands and the Amputee Coalition, the largest amputee advocate in the nation, have joined forces to stage next week's Southern California Limb Loss Education Day.

The Redlands group, guided by its leading advocate Bill Nessel, selected Palm Desert as the site and will serve as co-host with Palm Desert-based amputee organization Incight.

The Limb Loss Education Day activities will be at the Palm Desert YMCA tennis courts and the goal, according to Nessel, is to set the standard for future Limb Loss Day events.

The event is sponsored by the Amputee Coalition and the Orthotic Prosthetic Activities Foundation.

"There are only seven of these events scheduled in the country," Nessel said. "We, the amputees of Redlands, want to make this event the standard for the rest of the groups in the country."

The Limb Loss Education Day is a day-long event aimed at raising awareness about amputees, their families and their lives.

The entire agenda for the day - exhibits, lectures, handcycling and tennis clinics and an assortment of other activities - have been coordinated by the Amputee Connection of Redlands and Incight.

"We want to be the best in Southern California," Nessel said. "It's fantastic that we get to host it."

Nessel said people will be impressed with the guest speakers, especially Dr. Roberta Cone, a left-arm amputee, who will deliver a presentation, "A Conversation About Improving Your Physical and Emotional Well-Being."

"She works closely with vets and loves talking to her own kind," Nessel said.

"It really comes through. She knows what it is like to be an amputee. People will leave with a better feeling of themselves (than) when they arrived."

Nessel said there were a number of cities that were considered.

"They called us, and we got to talking about different venues," Nessel said. "We chose Palm (Desert). And we know marketing people from five other states will be here to check it out."

Representatives from Incight are eager for the event to arrive.

"To be held here in the Coachella Valley is significant for Incight," said Judy May, Incight's regional director.

"We have been working diligently on awareness. This gives our community the opportunity to step up and provide a fantastic event and to bring people together."
