I've been out of the box building game for a while but I may have to jump back in after discovering this stuff: Ecopoxy
I found it while researching resins that were aquarium safe (yeah, another expensive hobby) and after doing some research and reading reviews I decided I'd try using it to waterproof an MDF cabinet (car audio guys never use MDF right?).
The first coat of Ecopoxy has been laid down, I did the bottom, back and part of the inside of my stand with pretty heavy coats. Haven't used much material so far and the verdict is in on it's working performance.
This stuff is nice!!
-It does NOT emit any detectable odor, haven't tested it's toxicity, your on your own there
-It mixes easily although it doesn't change color when it's fully mixed (might be able to use a colored hardener to solve this problem)
-It spreads really well. I've used some resins that were goopy and really viscous which sucked but this stuff is thin and spreads very nicely.
-It even self levels to some extent, not something I'm used to seeing in polyester resin and I've never seen decent self leveling in traditional epoxy resins I've tried.
I have no idea on the finished result as it's sitting in the hobby room (yes!!!! I can work resin in the house! Holy crap, I'm warm and spreading resin during winter!!)
This is such a big deal for me because I've had projects sitting all summer waiting to find time to work on them and either the weather was poor or I was busy but this opens doors... I can't emphasize enough how happy I am about this!
I obviously haven't done any fiberglassing with this stuff but the signs are there that this product has potential and I expect I'll be getting some of my projects off the shelf and into the car soon.
